Obituary

Demeka L. Henry, 47 peacefully transitioned from this life on October 15, 2021, after a brief illness. Demeka was born, August 14, 1974.  She was the youngest child of Daniel and Delores Henry.

She was educated in Dorchester County Public schools and a graduate of North Dorchester High School with the class of 1992.  She loved learning and was involved in many of the school’s organizations.  She was a member of the National Honor Society, Keyettes and band. She held offices for the following organizations, the 9th grade class treasurer, 11th and 12th grade class president, 11th grade Students Against Drunk Drivers treasurer and 12th grade SADD president.  She proudly held the position of salutatorian.  She was honored with the task of delivering a commencement speech to encourage and spark excitement about the future possibilities for the class.

Demeka developed a love for baking at a young age.  She entered a 4H competition for baked goods at the Maryland state fair in Timonium.  At the age of nine she won first place for her first entry of a pound cake.  She gained a reputation for her baked goods and often had request to bake for people in the community and proudly delivered.

Demeka was raised in the church and enjoyed Sunday school, vacation bible school, and Sunday school trips, plays and recitations.  She loved the Lord, loved researching the Bible and accepted Jesus as her Savior at an early age.

Demeka received a Bachelor of Science in Computer and Information Science from the University of Maryland University College.  She also completed a database design and implementation certificate.  She was taking courses towards her Master of Science in Information Systems at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

She was employed for fifteen years as an office manager for UPS.  Later employment would find her at Dryer’s Grand Ice Cream.  Her first position was a quality systems specialist where one of her major duties was to taste the quality of the ice products to ensure they met the FDA standards for consumption.  With many years of service, Nestle allowed her to travel to places like Slovakia, Glen Dale and Bakersfield CA, and St Louis, MO to name a few.  Demeka’s hard work and dedication lead her to several positions at Nestle such as project manager and IT innovation lead, that shaped and molded her for leadership.

She leaves to cherish fond memories of her life, her mother Delores Henry and siblings Cassandra Henry of Crofton, MD, Gary Henry (Annie) of Hurlock, MD and Sheila Powell of Leesburg, FL.  Two nieces, Lakeshia Henry Stewart (Richard) of Hurlock, MD and Briana Powell of Leesburg, FL. Two nephews, Brandon Powell of Leesburg, FL. and Daniel Henry of Crofton, MD.  A godson Micah Anthony Stewart of Hurlock, MD. A host of aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Demeka freely shared her time and talents to anyone who needed assistance.  She was smart, innovative and a leader.  She didn’t mind rolling up her sleeves and jumping right in.  There wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do.  Her thinking process was unique, and it made a difference.
