Gertrude Ringold

March 9, 1938 — January 10, 2021

Gertrude Elizabeth Ringold, nee Ponder, was born on March 9, 1938. She passed from this life peacefully on January 10, 2021 in Springfield, Illinois. Born in Titusville, FL, her mother, Willie Mae, was the quintessential protective mother, fighting to assure her daughter a better life than her own. To this end they left Titusville, eventually settling in Cambridge, M.D. with step-father Johnnie  Ponder. Gertrude learned this lesson from her mother well and strived to do the same for her own children.

In 1953, she married Joseph Ringold and embarked on a 68 year saga with her soulmate, traveling throughout the world as an Air Force wife and supporting him in his career. She absorbed all the environments and knowledge of the people she encountered, gaining a level of sophistication and competence that outstripped her humble beginnings.

Know affectionally by many names; “Trudy, Ma, Mom Grandma”, Gertrude was a remarkable woman with a zest for life, knowledge, and a strong “7&7”. Wise beyond her age and education, she had an intuitive understanding of people and how they worked. This understanding shone through in her love of people and the many meaningful lifelong friendships she forged.

Gertrude loved all people but, first and foremost, was her family; doing anything and everything in her power to make sure their needs were satisfied. She was smart, organized and could learn how to do anything placed before her. From shucking crabs as child to sewing like a professional; selling real estate or growing investment portfolios; if she could learn it, she would and she would excel at it.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph Ringold, her daughter Rolanda Acosta, her son Joseph Ringold, Jr., her three grandchildren, Adelaina Acosta, Amanda Ringold, Joseph Acosta and three great-grandchildren, Domenic Adair,   Alorrianna Sitton and Charles Churchill. In addition, she is survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Gertrude’s indomitable spirit encouraged her family and friends to persist in the face of many struggles. With a smile on her face and a joke on her lips, she was adored and loved by all who knew her. Her love, smile, and laughter will be missed but never forgotten.
