Cora Etta Brown-Jones, known as Coretta, daughter of the late Armon & Emma (Heath) Brown born on October 6, 1926, peacefully departed this earth from her home on July 11, 2020. She was the tenth of twelve children. Her father, with help from her brother Louis (Bubby) and his wife Dorothy (Dottie), raised her after the passing of her mother at age 15.
Coretta obtained her education in Queen Anne’s County public colored school (Grasonville Community Center).
Coretta married Arthur Lee Jones Sr. on June 14, 1947, Flag Day (73 years). God Blessed Coretta and Arthur’s union with eight (8) Children.
Coretta was employed at Holly’s Restaurant and the Kent Island Yacht Club as a cook. She was also an employee at Harvey Ruth’s Seafood before establishing in-home babysitting for the community. She also managed the lawn care and cleaning service that kept a few dollars in the pockets of her children and grandchildren.
Coretta continued strengthening her strong Christian faith as a member of the Robinson African Methodist Episcopal Church. She served on the Stewardess Board, the Church choir, the Robinson Waylettes Choir, and a faithful member of the kitchen committee and was honored by the church on December 7, 2013, for her dedication and faithful service unto the Lord.
Coretta shared her passion for cooking with her sister Beulah and many members of the community of Grasonville. Coretta’s coleslaw and crab cakes were always family and community favorites.
Every Sunday dinner could be considered Thanksgiving either at the church, her home, or her sister Beulah’s home for all relatives and friends of the family.
