Almighty God in his wise and divine providence saw fit to call from labor to reward our beloved Pauline Maddox Giles, who departed this life August 31, 2019.
Pauline, daughter of the late James M. Maddox and Mary E. Maddox, was born in Cambridge, Maryland on January 8, 1920. She attended the public schools of Dorchester County and graduated from the F.D. St. Clair High School in 1936.
At an early age Pauline was married to Harry A. Vodery who preceded her in death. By that union were four children; Cassandra, Harry III, Joyce and Paula.
On December 12, 1954 Pauline was united in Holy Matrimony to William W. Giles, a widower from Woolford, Maryland. At that time she became a loving and devoted mother to Sylvia and Barbara Giles. William and Pauline were later blessed with two daughters, Candace and Cheryl.
Their children were her pride and joy. The family shared a bond of love, devotion, understanding and religious fervor that lasted through the years.
A member of Bethel A.M.E. Church for over 70 years, her religious commitment was evident not only by her staunch support and regular attendance; but also by her willingness to accept her Christian responsibilities. Pauline dutifully served her church for many years as a Communion Steward, a member of the Emergency Board and as a member of the Trustee Aides. She remained a faithful servant until her passing.
She loved to sew, cook and bake. For many years she took pleasure in preparing for the family gatherings where she would bake plenty of rolls and have the pies lined up in full view. She loved books and poetry and in the most recent years would smile as she recited one of her favorites or had a discussion about her favorite authors.
Her last place of employment was Western Publishing Company from which she retired in 1982.
She was a kind, loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She was preceded in death by her parents, James M. and Mary E. Maddox; sisters Gloria Duncan and Sarah Cooper, brother James M. Maddox Jr., daughters Joyce Vodery Holland and Barbara Giles Perry, grandson Barry Perry, and great granddaughter Tiera Perry.
She leaves to cherish her memory her husband of nearly 65 years, William W. Giles; children Cassandra Vodery Holmes, Harry A. Vodery III, Paula Vodery Blake, Sylvia Giles Webster, Candace Giles, Cheryl Giles Burgess and Ernest Tubman; two sons-in-law Charles Blake and Raymond Webster; one daughter-in-law JoAnn Vodery; 21 Grandchildren, 27 Great-Grandchildren, 6 Great-Great Grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
