Katie Isabella "Billy" (Carter) Murray

October 18, 1925 ~ March 14, 2018 (age 92)

Katie Isabella Murray, 92 of Royal Oak, departed this life on March 14, 2018 at Talbot Hospice in Easton, MD.  She was born on October 18, 1925 to the late William “Will” Carter and Nanie Butler Carter in Unionville, MD.

Katie was educated in the Unionville colored school.  Katie married John Walter Murray also known as “Buddie Nichols and  Speed Boy”.  They lived in Bellevue, MD until moving to Royal Oak, MD.  Katie was employed as a domestic housekeeper for the late Francis T. Ferguson family for over 50 years.  Katie was the matriarch of her family.  She enjoyed spending time with her family and going to yard sales with her daughter, Vivian and daughter in-law, Gladys Murray.  Katie enjoyed raising her children, grandchildren: Kay Ann Murray, Karen Murray Brummell, Mark Murray, Tony Murray and great grandchildren, Tyrone “Ty” Sampson, Tyron “Bubbles” “Ronnie” Sampson, Alvin “AJ” Babes Jr. and great granddaughter,  Chickayla “Kayla” Babes.  Katie enjoyed spending time with her sister Ruby Carter reminiscing about living on High Ho Farm which is known today as Pickering Creek.  In her later years, Katie was cared for by her loving and devoted daughters, Vivian Murray Massey, Ida Kay Price, Darlene Barney and son Darnell Murray.

Katie is survived by nine children, William Murray (Joy) of Preston, Walter Murray (Tyra) of Easton, Breon Murray of St. Michaels, Ida Kay Price of Royal Oak, Vivian Murray Massey of Royal Oak,  Darnell Murray of Royal Oak, Darlene Barney (Jerome) of Easton, Roland Murray (Gladys) of Royal Oak and Kay Ann Murray of Easton; 15 grandchildren, Karen Murray Brummell, Mark Murray, Tony Murray, Tysheka Gibson, Telicia Murray, Traveon Brice, Nicholas Murray,  George Sheridan Barney III, Keontae Murray, Katelyn Murray Cheers, Kataya Murray, Monay Simms Murray, Walasha Murray, Roezharion Elzey and Fabrise Sampson; 36 great grandchildren; 20 great great grandchildren; a sister, Ruby Carter of Easton; special niece, Dorris “Bunny” Lawrence; special son in-law, George Barney of New York; nephew, Keith Robinson of New Jersey; a host of special nieces of New Jersey; nephews, Harvey Thomas, Elwood Thomas, Albert Lewis Thomas, Carlette Carter and Charles Hopkins; nieces, Agnes Hubbard, Emma, Diane, Gloria and Dolly Mae and a host of cousins and friends. 

In addition to her parents, Katie is preceded in death by her husband, John Walter Murray, daughter, Shirley Murray, grandson, Justin Barney Sr.; great great grandsons, King White and Jayden Murray; brothers: Arthur Thomas, John Henry Butler Sr., William Carter; sisters, Mary Carter Robinson and Minnie Carter Sharp.
